In brief

  • Foot orthotics are custom, removable medical devices.
  • They improve foot function by redistributing load and rebalancing the way the foot bears weight.
  • Indicated in sport, in the diabetic, arthritic and rheumatic foot, and in everyday life.
  • Made by the podiatrist after a careful clinical and instrumental examination.

What foot orthotics are

Foot orthotics are removable, custom-made medical devices, used to improve foot function through a better redistribution of load and a correct realignment of bones and joints.

They are indicated in all those cases where an altered weight-bearing pattern causes painful conditions in the foot or may lead to problems in other parts of the body, even in the absence of symptoms.

Altered weight-bearing
Altered weight-bearing can cause pain in different areas of the foot.

Overload injuries

When they are indicated

Decisive in sport to prevent overload injuries linked both to anatomical faults and to the characteristics of training: the forces generated during athletic movement can far exceed body weight and, consequently, the resistance of the tissues.

In these cases the extent of the damage involves not only foot function but the entire musculoskeletal system, negatively affecting athletic performance.

Essential to prevent the development of lesions in the diabetic foot, they are equally indicated to relieve pain in the arthritic and rheumatic foot, especially in older people, where chronic painful conditions can result in genuine partial disability, accelerating ageing through the loss of independence and increasing the risk of falls.

Weight-bearing imbalances and posture
Weight-bearing imbalances can affect posture and other areas of the body.

They are also beneficial in everyday life, in leisure time and at work, where troublesome weight-bearing imbalances reduce quality of life and lead to postural adaptations that are harmful to other joints and to correct movement.

They therefore represent a valuable tool at the preventive, curative and rehabilitative level.

How they are made

They can be used in many ways: fitted both inside sports and leisure footwear and in specially adapted sandals.

Frequently asked questions

Are foot orthotics only needed when there is pain?
No. They are also indicated in the absence of symptoms, when an altered weight-bearing pattern may lead to problems in other parts of the body. They are useful in sport to prevent overload, in the diabetic foot, in the arthritic and rheumatic foot, and in everyday life.
Are they useful in the diabetic foot and in older people?
Yes. They are essential to prevent the development of lesions in the diabetic foot; in the arthritic and rheumatic foot of older people they help relieve chronic pain, reducing the loss of independence and the risk of falls.
How are foot orthotics made?
They are custom-made by the podiatrist, after a careful clinical and instrumental examination, according to the needs of each individual patient. They can be fitted in sports and leisure footwear and in adapted sandals.
